Lindemann: Pioneering green steel with major order win
Lindemann has secured a major contract with DEUMU
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable steel production, Lindemann has secured a major contract with DEUMU, a key player in Germany's metal recycling industry. This significant achievement, which includes the supply and maintenance of an EtaRip pre-shredder and 4,000 hp ZZ Power Zerdirator, marks one of Lindemann's largest orders under the new ownership of the Swedish MIMIR Group.
The customer – Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH (DEUMU) – is a subsidiary of major German steelmaker Salzgitter AG, who in turn is spearheading the transition towards low carbon emission green steel.
Salzgitter AG's ambitious SALCOS project aims to transform its steel mill in Salzgitter, Germany, into a benchmark for green steel production. By incorporating hydrogen energy, direct-reduced iron (DRI), and high purity ferrous scrap, SALCOS is paving the way for sustainable steelmaking. The installation of a new metal shredding plant, supplied by Lindemann, is a crucial component of this initiative.
An important step towards the production of green steel
Including a EtaRip preshredder and ZZ Power Zerdirator, the advanced shredding system will enable the processing of high-quality scrap grades. Positioned adjacent to the SALCOS plant under construction, this shredder line represents an important step towards the production of green steel.
Lindemann's expertise in machine technology and shredding, coupled with strategic partner, Belgium-based Lybover's sorting and de-dusting expertise, will ensure the seamless installation of this state-of-the-art facility. In announcing the deal, Sandrina Sieverdingbeck, Managing Director of DEUMU, emphasizes the strategic significance of this investment in optimizing scrap management for future steel production.
The deal extends beyond machinery supply, as Lindeman will also provide a long-term service contract, thereby supporting the development of the entire recycling process. With a focus on purity, density, and output, Lindemann is poised to exceed DEUMU's rigorous standards.
Commenting on the deal Lindeman CEO Carl Gustaf Goransson said: “As a medium-sized company rooted in a long tradition in mechanical and plant engineering, we at Lindemann are particularly proud to be working with our partners DEUMU and Lybover in realizing this challenging project in the field of metal recycling. We are especially pleased that DEUMU has opted for our globally acknowledged expertise in heavy engineering for metal recycling machines, which will enable the delivery of its very ambitious aims and objectives.”
This landmark order underscores Lindemann's pivotal role in advancing sustainable steel production. By delivering premium machinery and service, Lindemann is cementing its position as a trusted partner in the journey towards a greener future for the steel industry.
“The project will set new standards at Lindemann, both the areas of engineering and R&D, as well as in project management,” added Ioannis Giouvanitskas, Senior Executive Advisor at Lindemann. “Our success as a competent partner for metal recycling solutions will be further expanded. Thi si not a one-off either: Lindemann is ideally prepared for demanding collaborations with recycling companies and steelworks and thrives on making a valuable contribution to the green steel transformation.”
The deal was signed in early April, and the commissioned plant is expected to be operational in early 2026.
