Transforming Aerospace Waste into High-Quality Alloys

Transforming Aerospace Waste into High-Quality Alloys

How Metalloy Optimizes Aerospace Recycling
with LINDEMANN Technology
For nearly 50 years, Metalloy has specialized in the recycling and reprocessing of high-performance alloys (HPAs) for some of the most demanding industries in the world. Based in northern Germany, the company plays a critical role in the circular economy by transforming valuable aerospace production waste into reusable raw materials for foundries and alloy manufacturers. Among its customers are leading aerospace companies, including Airbus, which rely on Metalloy’s expertise in processing nickel, cobalt, titanium, and other high-value alloy materials.

The Challenge

The aerospace industry generates large volumes of swarf and turnings during machining operations. These materials consist of valuable special alloys but are difficult to handle due to their long, tangled, and highly intertwined structure. Before recycling can begin, the swarf must be reduced into small, uniform pieces suitable for briquetting and remelting. In addition, the hardness of aerospace alloys creates extreme wear conditions for processing equipment, requiring robust and highly durable machinery.

The Solution

To support its recycling operations, Metalloy invested in a LINDEMANN ZB 90 73 Turning Crusher. Designed specifically for processing long, curly, bushy, and voluminous swarf, the machine efficiently reduces material size before it is compressed into high-density briquettes. The new crusher replaced a previous LINDEMANN machine that had been operating successfully for almost 30 years. As part of the modernization project, LINDEMANN managed the complete replacement process, including dismantling and removing the existing equipment to ensure a seamless transition.

To meet the demanding requirements of aerospace alloys, the ZB 90 73 features customized wear components, reinforced liners, specialized wear plates, and an optimized rotor design developed using decades of operational experience from Metalloy.
