Gerdau Extends Shredder Component Life with LINDEMANN Double Grate Technology

Gerdau Extends Shredder Component Life with LINDEMANN Double Grate Technology

30% Longer Wear Life and 40% Faster Maintenance for Improved Scrap Recycling Performance
As the largest metal recycler in the Americas, Gerdau continuously seeks opportunities to improve operational efficiency across its recycling and steelmaking operations. At its Usina Riograndense facility in Brazil, the company partnered with LINDEMANN to optimize shredder performance through the implementation of innovative double grate technology.

The Challenge

Wear components play a critical role in shredder productivity and availability. Frequent maintenance shutdowns, component replacements and extended service intervals can significantly impact production efficiency and operating costs.

Gerdau was looking for a solution that could:

  • Extend component lifetime
  • Reduce maintenance duration
  • Improve workplace safety
  • Increase overall shredder performance

The Solution

Together with LINDEMANN, Gerdau launched South America’s first double grate shredder project. The new grate configuration not only increased grate durability but also improved hammer wear distribution and overall shredder efficiency. The redesign simplified maintenance procedures and significantly reduced replacement times.

The Results

The pilot project delivered impressive results:

  • 30% longer grate lifetime
  • 230,000 tons processed per grate set compared to 180,000 tons previously
  • 40% reduction in maintenance time
  • Reduced equipment downtime
  • Improved workplace safety
  • More homogeneous hammer wear
  • Increased operational efficiency

Key Benefits at a Glance

Following the project’s success, Gerdau approved the implementation of double grate technology across additional recycling facilities in Brazil.
  • 30% longer component life
  • 40% faster maintenance
  • Reduced downtime
  • Improved worker safety
  • Optimized hammer wear
  • Increased productivity
  • Proven LINDEMANN technology
